San Antonio Flood Emergency (SAFE) System
Due to the geography of San Antonio, floods are a serious potential hazard.
In order to better prepare residents, the City’s Office of Emergency Management developed
an early flood notification system and public awareness program called the San Antonio
Flood Emergency (SAFE) System. The mission of the SAFE program is to provide early flood notification during heavy rain events, and to educate the
public on actions necessary to protect life and property.
The last 100 year flood was in 2002, when 35 inches of rain fell in the San Antonio
area, resulting in 12 deaths. This was four years after the previous 100 year flood
in 1998, which caused the deaths of 32 people. Because of the disastrous potential
for loss of life, it is vital that San Antonio residents protect themselves, their
families, and property by preparing for floods.
